We are facing a paradigm shift in education, pushed by technology and the new delivery systems it makes possible, and pulled by the demands of lifelong learning required by a knowledge economy. The student is no longer the captive client of monopoly education providers called universities. Issues involving the nature of education, its definition, its power structure, and its culture are being debated: the question is not only how something is taught but what is taught, when, why, by whom, and for what purpose. Who should control education? How much privilege should professors have? What rights do students have as consumers? In The Tower under Siege Brian Lewis, Christine Massey, and Richard Smith explore these important themes and issues from the varying perspectives of students, teachers, policy makers, and administrators. They describe the opportunities, changes, and policies developing in Canadian universities and governments in response to the education revolution. While most studies of the education revolution tend to be highly polemical, The Tower under Siege occupies a middle space, identifying issues and policy processes used to manage change and create more opportunities for education. The Tower under Siege will be of great interest to anyone concerned with, excited about, or worried by the expanding role of technology in higher education: teachers, researchers, students, parents, policy makers, and administrators.

Preston, Elo, and colleagues provide a definitivereconstruction of the demographic history of African Americans in the20th century. Finally we have an accurate indication of the deplorableconditions that this population experienced in the past and continuesto face today. That this history could only be recovered from flaweddata at great effort speaks volumes about their second-classcitizenship. That their life expectancy remains below that of citizensin some Third World nations today speaks of the great distance thatlies before us on the road to racial equality.'Doug Massey, Princeton University, USAThis thorough study helps fill in the demographic history ofthe African-American population. With the development of consistentsets of population estimates over the 60 year period (1930 - 1990), the work increases our understanding of the quality of the census dataand the completeness of coverage of the African-American population. One of the important results is the disentanglement of the age, period, and cohort effects on coverage.'J. Gregory Robinson, U.S. Bureau of the CensusAfrican Americans constitute one of the most interesting and dynamic components of the population of the United States. Unfortunately, an accurate assessment of their demographic characteristics is beset by inaccuracies in the underlying data. Using a novel strategy that combines record linkage and demographic/statistical analysis, the authors produce an internally consistent and robust set of estimates of the African-American population during the period 1930-1990. They interpret the record that emerges, with special reference to longevity trends and differentials. This work is of particular interest to demographers, sociologists and students of ethnic studies.Preston, Elo, and colleagues provide a definitive reconstruction of the demographic history of African Americans in the 20th century. Finally we have an accurate indication of the deplorable conditions that this population experienced in t@ZÓ33333ÿ¾Úx

Reading Jack Kerouac's classic On the Road through Virginia Woolf's canonical A Room of One's Own, the author of this book examines a genre in North American literature which, despite its popularity, has received little attention in literary and cultural criticism: women's road narratives. The study shows how women's literature has inscribed itself into the American discourse of the Whitmanesque open road, or, more generally, the freedom of the road. Women writers have participated in this powerful American myth, yet at the same time also have rejected that myth as fundamentally based on gendered and racial/ethnic hierarchies and power structures, and modified it in the process of writing back to it. The book analyzes stories about female runaways, outlaws, questers, adventurers, kidnappees, biker chicks, travelling saleswomen, and picaras and makes theoretical observations on the debates regarding discourses of spatiality and mobility-debates which have defined the so-called spatial turn in the humanities. The analytical concept of transdifference is introduced to theorize the dissonant plurality of social and cultural affiliations as well as the narrative tensions produced by such pluralities in order to better understand the textual worlds of women's multiple belongings as they are present in these writings. Roads of Her Own is thus not only situated in the broader context of a constructivist cultural studies, but also, by discussing narrative mobility under the sign of gender, combines insights from social theory and philosophy, feminist cultural geography, and literary studies. Key names and concepts: Doreen Massey - Rosi Braidotti - Literary Studies - Spatial Turn - Gendered Space and Mobility - Nomadism - Road writing - Transdifference - American Culture - Popular Culture - Women's Literature after the Second Wave - Quest - Picara.
